Last Saturday night, Ron and I headed over to Vu Livehouse (地下絲絨) in Ximending for Rock ‘N’ Roll Circus, a semi-annual event hosted by The Deadly Vibes. This year’s event had a retro theme and mostly Japanese acts, including burlesque dancers Miss Cabaretta and Miwa Rock, mod rockers the Minnesota Voodoo Men and psychobilly trio Ed Woods. DJ Harry the Hampstead Heath spun his collection of vintage R&B and rock n’ roll records from the 1950s and 1960s. Needless to say, my head exploded when I saw his collection and the boxes he had them in:

Miwa Rock (the woman with shorter hair) and Miss Cabaretta evoked the spirit of 1950s pin-up girls (Miss Cabaretta’s inspirations are very eclectic; read my short profile of her here):

In addition to playing some amazing tunes, the Minnesota Voodoo Men looked very handsome in their mod suits and shiny black winklepickers. I told Ron he really needs to get one of those suits made for himself.

Ed Woods (read a Japan Times article about them here) really got the crowd moving, even before their bassist Billy Trash used the floor as one giant Slip N’ Slide:

That’s fake blood, by the way. I hope.
