I recently got the chance to interview Black As Chocolate founder Stella Huang (黃湘怡) for Taipei543, a fantastic new lifestyle Web site. After launching 12 cake shops throughout Taiwan, the company recently opened their first cafe in the food court of Eslite Xinyi. Stella discussed leaving her successful music career to open an Awfully Chocolate franchise, the legal dispute that resulted when she decided to break her contract with the Singaporean company, and setting out on her own with Black As Chocolate. Of course, we also talked about what makes Black As Chocolate‘s products special. I’ve tasted Black As Chocolate’s cakes before and I know how delicious their desserts (which use Belgium chocolate picked for its rich, roasted flavor) can be. I was very excited to sample their new items (like fondue and brownies a la mode) during my interview with Stella.
A few days ago, I made a second visit to Black As Chocolate Cafe with my friend Kath. The brand’s desserts can get a bit pricey, but they had a special: two mini-cakes, two big scoops of ice cream and two pots of tea for NT$500. All diners that day also got six complimentary pieces of chocolate truffle candy. Not a bad deal for NT$500! Well, I got an even better deal because Kath treated me. Thanks Kath :-).
Their classic cake flavor is dark chocolate, but I also highly recommend the ones made with fresh seasonal fruits, including mango and lychee. Their brandy cherry cake is also delicious.
Black As Chocolate covers their ice cream scoops with hot chocolate syrup so it instantly freezes into a crunchy shell. Cracking it open with the cafe’s little golden spoons is a lot of fun.
If you like salty-sweet flavor combinations, try the salt caramel truffle. Black As Chocolate Cafe is very popular, so make sure to make reservations before you visit by calling (02) 2796-5133. The store is located on floor B2 of Eslite Xinyi, 1 Songgao Rd, Taipei City (台北市松高路11號).
